Volunteers make the world go round. Or according to Meerilinga’s High Wycombe volunteer Joanna, “volunteers stop the world from collapsing” all together. Joanna has been volunteering for over 60 years, giving up her spare time to help not-for-profits such as Meerilinga, without asking for anything in return. “It would be an unrecognizable world without volunteers,” as she speaks, her passion for this subject is obvious, and the happiness she finds in helping the children, even more so. It is the essential support of volunteers, like Joanna, that allows Meerilinga to continue helping families and supporting children, as we have done for over a century.
Volunteering Australia has found that the average volunteer donates $111,000 of their time (2010), so the entire volunteer population is worth $25.4 billion to the Australian economy. So, for International Volunteer Day, Meerilinga thanks every one of our volunteers, from the bottom of our heart. We simply couldn’t do it without you.
“A volunteer means someone who is willing to go out of their way to help somebody else or a community do something meaningful,” (Amanda, High Wycombe)
