Meerilinga joins the Street Library Revolution

At Meerilinga we’re proud to be active in the local community. One of the things we’ve done to ensure this is to join the Street Library Revolution! Each of our six centres is now home to a Street Library. The Street Libraries are for everyone to borrow, donate and share books. The aim of this is to encourage reading and literacy in the home.

Literacy is hugely important in a child’s development. The steps taken to laying this foundation begin at birth. Parents who read aloud to their children expose them to hundreds of words they might not otherwise hear.

By reading just one book a day parents are allowing a child to hear around 78,000 words a year. It’s also estimated that children who are read to hear almost 1.4 million additional words during story book reading. ( 2019 study published in the Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics). All of this helps to develop and extend a child’s vocabulary, helps with sounds of letters and builds on their thinking and problem solving skills.

So, if you’re looking for some new books to actively engage your children with reading then the Meerilinga Street Library is for you!

And it isn’t just local community centres, early learning programs and businesses that can be a part of the Street Library revolution. Anyone can have their very own Street Library! Head to the official Street Library page for details on how to go about getting a Library for your street.
