As part of Children’s Week 2016, Meerilinga partnered with ten other agencies in the Thinker in Residence Program, an initiative of the Commissioner for Children and Young People WA. The program brings world leading researchers and practitioners to Perth to raise awareness about important issues that impact the wellbeing of our youngest citizens. This year’s Thinker is Professor Jane Burns who has dedicated her career to strengthening children’s mental health with a strong focus on social media.
Professor Donna Cross, Head of Health Promotion and Education Research at Telethon Kids Institute, also presented at the Seminar. Dissecting the impact of Children being pushed into formal learning earlier and earlier, identifying risk factors and the practice implications for Early Childhood Professionals and looking at ways they can support children and still facilitate play at the core of learning in the early years.
Professor Jane Burns will return for the Thinker in Residence Phase Two between 13 and 16 March 2017 to discuss how to implement the issues raised in Phase One.
