Last weekend, Rebecca Jones from Meerilinga Cockburn and Hilton joined Ngalla Yorga Waangkan Aboriginal Corporation and Moordijt Kulungar Playgroup for the third annual Intergenerational Camp, which was held at the beautiful Myalup Campgrounds. Held just before National Reconciliation Week, this camp was a practical way to celebrate this year’s theme of ‘Bridging Now to Next’ by providing space for Elders, families and little ones to share their knowledge across generations.
These stories were shared during campfire gatherings and bush walks, and through collaborative activities such as an art project led by the talented Erica, who explained the meaning behind Aboriginal art and design. Aunty Roslyn also shared her talents by helping prepare stew and damper together with the families.
There was a powerful and emotional stop at Roland’s, where Aunty Lynn shared her personal experience of being taken from her family and growing up in a mission. This was a moment of truth-telling won’t be forgotten by those who were there, whether young or old.
This camp continues to be a space of deep cultural learning, healing and unity while also strengthening the relationship participants have with culture, family and boodjar (Country).
Thank you to Rebecca for not only representing Meerilinga at this camp but for helping to organise and implement the camp, including driving the bus and helping to prepare meals. As an organisation, we’re honoured to have been part of such a meaningful experience during a time when we reflect on Reconciliation and the work still to be done.
