Everyone should know about children’s rights – especially the children of our communities!
While it is essential for Educators and other adults to know and respect the rights of children, teaching children their own rights can empower them to know how they should be treated and how they should treat others while also promoting their self-confidence and ability to advocate for themselves. For Early Childhood Educators, parents and families, teaching children about their rights can also create an environment where they feel safe and supported.
Children’s Week is a great opportunity to teach children about their rights and Article 42 (this year’s theme) is a great encouragement to spread the word about the rights of children. But sometimes we need the tools to do this and help our children understand what we mean when we talk about their ‘rights’.
So how do we teach children about their rights?
Well, the team at Meerilinga Kingsley have come up with lesson plans to help Early Childhood Educators inform and educate children about their different rights. Paired with the Learning About Our Rights – Together! (Kingsley Edition) book, these plans for 2-5 and 3-7 year olds will give you a great head start when it comes to embedding the rights of children into your teaching kit.
